Internet Support INTERNET SAFETY TIPS FOR FAMILIES

Put your computer in a central location in your home where you can monitor what your child or other family member is doing.

Never put a computer in a child’s bedroom.

You cannot watch over the computer every minute so, regularly check the history of internet files viewed on your computer.

Always visit chat rooms yourself to ensure they are suitable before allowing your child to use them or better still, block them.

Do not leave your children at the computer while you are out.

Protect your internet access with a password - which means your child cannot use the net without your permission. Don’t use your normal passwords (Child name, dog’s name or car registration number!) as these can easily be guessed by
naturally inquisitive children.

Tell your children about the dangers of the internet. Talk to them about what they are doing and looking at. The earlier you start the easier that this is. Discuss family values and ask them if they would be ashamed to discuss what they are looking at or doing on the Internet. Encourage them to be accountable.

They may know more than you, but ask them about their facebook, myspace or bebo profiles, talk to them about the problems of ‘chatting’ with others that they don’t know and linking with other people.

Restrict the time that you and your children spend on the internet, don’t let it take control of your life.

These above parental controls don’t protect you....ask us not to send you the master password so your connection will always be filtered. Don’t say or think that it won’t happen to you and hope that’s the case. It’s easy to protect yourself as well.

Additional Blocking

in addition to the millions of sites that we block, we give you the facility to block other sites that you may have concerns about. Maybe facebook, myspace, or bebo, or other social networking sites.

It’s a fact that older men pose as young girls and build up ‘friendships’ which can end with threatening results.

It’s easy to ‘lead on’ in text and writing.

There really can be harm in chatting.

Do you really know who you are chatting with?

Do you know how old they are?

Do you know their morals and values? Are they similar to yours?

How many of those that you are linked to do you really know?

Are you aware that the search and communicate features of these sites are often used by sexual predators to find victims?

These social networking (chat sites) work by accepting people, so you end up with friend of friends of friends asking to join to you....how many of you or your children would say no to a request?
